When it comes time to have replacement windows installed, don't just wait until they show up and let them get to work. While some installation crews may be willing to get everything ready, it will cost you more because the job will take longer. Some preparations may be required by the installation company while others should be considered by you to make the process go much smoother.
Area Preparation
You should provide access to the windows. This includes moving furniture out of the way and making sure any landscaping will not hinder the job. While it might not be ideal for the look of any bushes or plants, you should trim them back to allow the workers room to put a ladder and do the work. If you have window boxes, be sure to take them down. In addition, remove all window treatments, to include rods and/or shutters. Now is a good time to have the curtains and drapes cleaned. It is also a good idea to lay down some type of plastic or canvas tarp to protect your flooring.
Children and Pets
If you have small children or pets that roam about the house, it is best to find some way to keep them away for the duration of the installation. You can put pets in a crate or a room that will not be getting new windows. Take your children to a friend's or relative's that can keep them occupied for the day. Even well-behaved kids and animals can be curious and get in the way. You would not want someone to become hurt accidentally. Even if no one gets hurt, children and even dogs can distract the workers, making the job take longer, and cost you more money.
Arrange for the Storage or Removal of the Old Windows
Once the old windows come out, they are your responsibility. You may want to keep them for a while, in which case you need to find a place to store them. You could also sell them. You can put an ad in the classifieds to find a buyer. Make sure he or she will be available to pick them up once the installation crew has them all out. If you are going to be putting them in the trash, contact the trash company to find out what is needed for them to pick up the windows.
